Description
Early August witnessed commencement of the winding down of the Wirek coal mine (Kopalnia "Wirek") in Ruda Śląska, a process scheduled for completion in November 2011. The mine, a part of the Halemba-Wirek colliery complex, had been active for 200 years, and its coal deposits have now been depleted. Of the 5,000 employees of Halemba-Wirek, the Wirek pit accounts for 800. These employees will either be put to work on the liquidation process or taken up by other coal mines in Ruda Śląska.
