Description
Slovenske magnezitove zavody (SMZ) has announced that it is to cut 186 jobs in Jelsava by the end of 2008. The job cuts are attributed to the decline of the steel industry, mainly in Ukraine. Redundancies will mainly affect employees on fixed-term contracts. SMZ produces magnesite components for blast-furnace lining. Jelšava is the region with the second highest unemployment rate (24.5%) in the country.
