Description
Legler, a leading textile company, is to close its main plant located at Ponte San Pietro (in the province of Bergamo), with the consequent loss of 360 jobs. Legler, operating since 1863, has the Ponte San Pietro plant and three plants in Sardinia. After some years of economic and financial problems, around one year ago, the Sardinia region – by means of its holding companies (Sfirs and Piltar) – took over the company in order to find a potential buyer. Up to now, all attempts to find a new buyer were unsuccessful.
The trade unions are demanding to meet the Sardinia governor in order to know more information on the industrial future of Legler. The workers employed at the Ponte San Pietro plant could benefit from the ‘special’ Wages Guarantee Fund till the end of November 2008.
Legler produces cotton base fabrics for casual and sportswear. It has four plants - one is located at Ponte San Pietro in the province of Bergamo, and the other three are located at Siniscola, Macomer and Ottana in Sardinia.
