Description

As part of its 2026/27 two-year budget, the City of Reutlingen has announced plans to cut around 250 jobs over the next four years, affecting municipal staff across all areas of local government in Reutlingen.

The restructuring is driven by the need to cut costs in the face of a strained financial situation, whilst the city administration continues to invest in schools, infrastructure and public services. The budget, adopted in March 2026, was described by the mayor as the strictest austerity plan in the city’s history. The cuts amount to 10 per cent of the jobs in the city council.

Trade unions and employee representatives, including ver.di and the staff council, have criticised the planned cuts and warned of an increased workload for remaining staff, longer waiting times and reduced service quality for citizens, whilst at the same time acknowledging the need to implement the city council’s decisions.
