Description
Capgemini, a French digital services company, is set to cut 2,409 posts in France by 2026. On the 20th of January, the company announced that it would be making 2,409 job cuts through voluntary departures and 600 internal reclassifications. The management justifies this decision by a decrease in activity in France caused by a decline in the manufacturing sectors they are dependent upon (i.e. automobile sector), as well as technological developments, such as artificial intelligence. The restructuring will affect 7% of the company's workforce in France.
However, this restructuring has been heavily criticised by employees and social partners alike. Indeed, some employees claim that they are being pressured to accept assignments that require mobility, despite having family commitments. Due to the presence of a mobility clause in their contracts, a refusal to do so is grounds for dismissal. Other testimonies indicate that measures are being used to make employees uncomfortable, such as deteriorating their working conditions, or by adding responsibilities, which has a serious impacts on their mental and overall health.
On the other hands, the CGT trade union, claims that the use of voluntary departures are being used to avoid implementing a job-saving plan, thereby reducing costs for the employer. The CGT also points out the company's good economic performance and
criticised the lack of information provided to social partners, with the company sharing information to the press before informing unions. Similarly, the FO trade union, criticised the lack of transparency and the company's focus to speeding up procedure, thereby reducing rights of social partners and putting pressure on employees.
Several large scale restructuring have been recorded on the ERM database, with the latest in Spain in 2016 Capgemini 2016 - ES.
In France, Capgemini has a total workforce of 35 000 employees. In the world, the company had 355,000 employees, as of September 2026.
