Description
Naval Service, the Irish maritime defence force, announced a recruitment plan for 163 sailors in 2025. Recruitment is already under way, with 84 recruits inducted by the end of August and a similar number expected to join before the end of the year. Alongside the new hires, 33 sailors are slated for discharge, all of whom are direct dismissals.
The recruitment drive is aimed at addressing a long‑running crisis in recruitment and retention within the Defence Forces, which has been particularly acute in the Naval Service and has reduced operational capacity. Falling personnel numbers have contributed to a sharp decline in patrol days in recent years, prompting concerted efforts by the authorities to rebuild staffing levels.
The expansion aligns with the government’s LOA2 strategy to grow the Naval Service by 700 personnel by 2028 and reach a total of 1,794 staff. That compares to a recruitment total of 97 in 2024, 68 in 2023, and just 28 in 2022.
