Description

Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG), a state-owned hard coal mining company, plans to cut around 5,000 jobs in Poland in 2026.

The restructuring is due to declining coal demand and will coincide with the closure of the Bielszowice unit by 30 June and the start of a four-year liquidation of the Wujek unit from 1 April; reductions will mainly affect mining and processing workers and be implemented through voluntary departures.

The company will use state-funded protective measures under the amended Mining Act, including paid mining leave and one-off severance payments of PLN 170,000 net, with first payments expected at the end of February.

Management stresses there will be no compulsory layoffs, and no union reactions have been reported.

Polska Grupa Górnicza employs about 35,000 people and is Poland’s largest hard coal producer, operating mainly in the Silesian region. PGG went through restructurisation already in 2024 and 2021, see: Polska Grupa Górnicza 2024 - PLPolska Grupa Górnicza 2021 - PL
