European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
The French company Symbio, specialising in the manufacture of hydrogen fuel cells for transport, has announced a restructuring plan involving the elimination of 358 jobs at its plant in the Lyon suburb of Saint-Fons, out of a workforce of around 506 workers. The site had initially 530 employees, but a previous wave of resignations had already occurred earlier in the year, following Stellantis’s disengagement.
The decision follows the withdrawal of shareholder Stellantis, which stated that it no longer sees sufficient medium-term profitability prospects in the hydrogen market. According to Symbio's works council, the redundancy plan is considered severe for the sector.he reductions will take place through a social plan (PSE).
Symbio is a French company created in 2010 and jointly owned by Michelin, Forvia and Stellantis. The Saint‑Fons factory, inaugurated in 2023 as Europe’s largest fuel‑cell production site, cost nearly one billion euros to develop.Symbio has benefited from up to €600 million in funding from the French state and the European Union.
