Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Fiege Logistics has initiated collective dismissal procedures affecting over 300 permanent workers at the Shein logistics facility in Stradella, which will close by year-end as operations transfer to Poland. The German logistics company managing the warehouse for the Chinese fast-fashion brand announced the decision during a meeting at the prefecture office.
The layoffs affect 311 permanent employees including warehouse workers and office staff, while an additional 150 temporary contracts were not renewed upon expiration. Collective dismissal letters will trigger the legally mandated 75-day negotiation period between company and unions.
Fiege has offered relocation for 60 workers to regional warehouses, including 50 positions at Zooplus in Stradella and 10 at Castel San Giovanni, plus €6,000 incentives for transfers to Novara or Bologna facilities. However, few workers have accepted distant relocations due to family obligations in the Pavia area.
Filt CGIL (trade union) Pavia criticized the "ping-pong of responsibility" between Fiege and Shein, demanding concrete proposals including proper severance packages and unemployment benefit activation. The union warns of potential mobilization if adequate responses are not provided.
