Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

As announced on 5 September 2025, the German company Heraeus Covantics, which manufactures quartz glass and is part of the Heraeus Group, is cutting 240 jobs.
In Kleinostheim in the Aschaffenburg district (Bavaria), 170 employees are affected. Additionally, 70 employees are affected in Bitterfeld, Saxony-Anhalt. The reason cited is low demand in the semiconductor industry, the company’s most important customer.
The Heraeus Group, headquartered in Hanau, is among the largest family-owned companies in Germany by revenue. The company has locations in Europe, the USA, and Asia.
Heraeus Covantics employs 2,000 people worldwide, of which 1,000 are in Germany.
