Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

ZF Slovakia, the Slovak division of the German automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG, has announced plans to shut down its Detva manufacturing facility, leading to the loss of approximately 250 jobs. The company has confirmed a phased cessation of operations, with complete closure expected in the first half of 2026.
The decision is attributed to a prolonged decline in demand across Europe’s automotive industry—production volumes are projected to be around 30 % lower in 2025 compared to 2018. The closure is also tied to the end of operations by a key local supplier in 2023, which had previously provided a cost advantage to the Detva plant.
ZF plans to shift production activities to other locations within Slovakia, particularly to its facility in Levice, aiming to optimize cost structures and align production capacity with market expectations.
Support measures are being put in place for affected employees. These include specially tailored assistance programs compliant with Slovak labour law, intended to help workers transition as operations wind down.
This announcement follows recent financial highlights: in 2024, ZF Slovakia, a.s. reported an 11 % increase in revenue to €882.1 million and a 47 % rise in profits, reaching €26.69 million. It employs between 3,000 and 3,999 people in Slovakia.
