Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

The pulp and paper manufacturer Sappi Europe has initiated cooperation negotiations with a plan to dismiss up to 100 employees at its paper factory in Lohja, Finland. The dismissals are related to the closure of one of the production lines at the factory. The factory produces paper suitable for magazines, the demand of which has been in steady decline.
Following the announcement, the city of Lohja has announced that it has launched preparations for support measures and has formed a working group for this purpose. The city’s public employment services can offer dismissed employees mapping of open positions and training options. The city has also organised a meeting with Sappi’s management.
Sappi Europe belongs to the conglomerate Sappi, based in South-Africa. Their factory in Lohja employs a total of 550 persons.
