Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

The city of Tampere has initiated cooperation negotiations, which may result in the dismissal of 200 staff. The cooperation negotiations are a response to the city’s budget deficit and comprise all employees. In addition to the direct dismissals, some employees may have changes in their contractual tasks.
The city of Tampere states in its press release that it is especially reviewing functions in which the city does not have a statutory obligation to provide services and plans to examine administrative structures and tasks. The city further states that as they aim for a permanent streamlining, temporary lay-offs would not suffice as a cost-saving procedure.
The negotiations began on August 18, 2025, and are set to last for at least six weeks. Any changes will be implemented on 1 July 2026 at the latest.
Tampere is the largest city in the Pirkanmaa region of Finland and employs approximately 9,500 people.
