Description
The city of Karlsruhe (Baden-Württemberg) has announced that it will cut around 440 jobs in the city administration over the next five years as part of a tightened austerity programme. The job cuts are due to an ongoing financial crisis and the need to balance the city's budget.
The reduction will affect between 400 and 440 of the administration's total workforce of around 7,000. The measure will be implemented by the city administration a socially responsible manner through natural fluctuation.
The city administration points out that the quality of service for citizens will decline. The measures will be criticised, and protests against the planned cuts have already begun.
Without additional financial support from the federal and state governments, the per capita debt of the city of Karlsruhe could rise to over 6,000 euros by 2030.
