Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Booking.com, a global web portal operator in the travel and accommodation sector and part of the US-based Booking Holdings group, has announced the planned dismissal of up to 1,000 employees as part of an internal restructuring aimed at improving efficiency. The restructuring will primarily affect managerial layers within the organization, particularly at the company’s headquarters in Amsterdam, where between 200 and 1,000 jobs are expected to be cut. Despite strong financial performance, the company stated that the restructuring is intended to streamline operations and reduce bureaucracy.
The restructuring process began earlier in 2024 and was initially concentrated on upper management, where 50 positions were already eliminated. A collective agreement was reached in July 2024 with trade unions after months of negotiations. The updated social plan improves severance conditions for lower-income employees, increasing the voluntary departure compensation by €2,500. Trade unions reported broad support among their members for the agreement, which includes both a voluntary departure scheme and a broader social plan.
