Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

Carrefour, the French-based retail chain, has announced that it plans to cut 515 jobs in Europe.
The cuts are part of a broad restructuring in Europe, including store closures, job cuts, and a strategic shift toward a franchise model. The changes primarily affect Italy and Poland.
In Italy, Carrefour will cut 175 out of 700 employees at its Milan headquarters Carrefour 2025-IT. The company is reportedly considering exiting the Italian market altogether, with Lidl mentioned in media speculation as a potential buyer.
In Poland, Carrefour plans to cut 340 positions across 25 stores as part of its restructuring efforts in 2025 Carrefour 2025-PL. The chain closed more stores than it opened in 2024, resulting in a net loss of PLN 53.6 million and a decline in the number of stores.
Carrefour operates in over 40 countries across Europe, Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. The group maintains both company-owned and franchised stores under various banners (Carrefour, Carrefour Market, Carrefour City, Express). As of 2024, the chain had about 14,000 stores. Globally, Carrefour employs about 321,000 people.
