Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

The British medical technology company Smith & Nephew has closed its orthopaedics division in Tuttlingen (Baden-Württemberg) with effect from 31 December 2024, cutting 210 production jobs in the process. The reason for the closure was a strategic decision to optimise the global production network.
Neither social plans nor details of compensation measures were announced. Together with the IG Metall trade union, the employees criticised the closure and staged protests. Local politicians have also spoken out against the closure.
Smith & Nephew employs around 18,000 people worldwide.
