Description

ArcelorMittal, a global steel producer, has announced that it will relocate up to 1,400 jobs from Europe to India.

The company plans to relocate between 1,250 and 1,400 jobs in support functions such as marketing, commercial, HR, financial services, order management, supply chain, and IT services from Europe to India. The programme will affect entities in France, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

Additionally, the company is to cut about 600 jobs at its production sites across France. AlcerolMittal 2025-FR

The restructuring programme is taking place amid a deepening crisis in the European steel industry, marked by a 20% drop in demand over five years and increasing steel imports. ArcelorMittal has also suspended its planned €1.8 billion decarbonization investment in Dunkerque, despite previously securing €850 million in state aid. Globally, the company is heavily investing in India and Brazil, shifting its strategic focus away from Europe.

AlcerolMittal employs over 125,000 people worldwide.

**Updated, 04/02/2026: ** On 29 January 2026, ArcelorMittal has launched a study examining its support functions across Europe, including up to 1,150 positions in Luxembourg and the potential relocation of as many as 5,600 support‑function jobs to India and Poland. The announcement has raised serious concerns among Luxembourg trade unions, who stressed that no decisions on redundancies or relocations have been made and that no social plan is currently under discussion.

Unions criticised the timing and political context, noting that the company is simultaneously requesting European support to shield the steel sector from unfair competition while considering shifting jobs outside Europe.

ArcelorMittal rejected claims of planned large‑scale relocations, clarifying that the figures reflect only the scope of the study, not confirmed actions. The company said the purpose is to assess which functions could theoretically be relocated, though many may ultimately remain in place.

Further details are expected at the next European Works Council meeting on 26 February.
