Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.

The appliance manufacturer BSH Electrodomésticos (manufacturer of Balay, Bosch, Siemens, Gaggenau and Neff), will close its factory in Esquíroz (Navarra), where it employs 655 workers in two plants. Its intention is to cease activity in the next six months. The Esquiroz factory, dedicated to refrigerators and compact dishwashers, is one of the five production centres that BSH has in Spain.
Company sources indicate that, given the difficult market situation, and after a period of reflection and exhaustive analysis, the legal representation of the workers was informed this Monday of the intention to initiate the closure process. The reasons given by the company refer to the lack of competitiveness of the Esquíroz plant, despite the numerous improvement measures carried out.
With 4,400 employees in Spain, BSH Electrodomésticos manufactures around 4 million parts a year in Spain, half of which are exported.

The workforce at BSH Electrodomésticos España in Esquíroz has approved the preliminary agreement on the collective redundancy plan (ERE) that entails the closure of the plant, affecting 609 employees. In a referendum with over 91% participation, 78% voted in favour (475 votes), while 20.8% opposed the agreement. The deal includes severance pay of 45 days per year worked without a cap, plus an additional €1,500 per year of service, external outplacement support, and approximately 50 transfers to production centres in Zaragoza. Workers over 55 will be offered early retirement options.
While the unions UGT, CCOO, ATISS and Solidari supported the agreement, LAB and ELA opposed it, criticising the lack of industrial alternatives. The plant is expected to cease operations by December 2025, with government efforts underway to promote reindustrialisation in the region.
