Description

The Hungarian subsidiary of the Chinese battery manufacturer Eve Energy is building a new battery plant in Debrecen. The investment is expected to create over 1,000 new jobs, according to the plans. The production site will supply the BMW plant in Debrecen (also under construction) with cutting-edge cylindrical batteries. The investment is estimated at approximately €1 billion, with the Hungarian government contributing a subsidy of €35 million. Production is set to begin in 2026, but staffing has already started. According to the schedule, the number of newly hired employees will be 60 in 2024, 100 in 2025, 550 in 2026, and nearly 300 in 2027.

The company has signed a declaration of intent to cooperate with the universities of Debrecen and Wuhan. The collaboration will include, among other things, providing internships for students in chemistry, physics, and engineering

Updated, 01/02/2026: The timeline of the hirings has been amended, based on more recent reports. The firm announced the initiation of a recruitment campaign, starting at the end of January 2026 and lasting until the middle of the year, during which 400 new employees will be hired, mostly technicians, engineers and administrative and support staff. This falls short of the original hiring plans for 2026 – 550 new employees. As of 20 January 2026, 165 workers has been hired so far, which is largely in line with the original recruitment plans for 2024 and 2025. The plans regarding the final number of workers at top capacity – approximately 1000 persons – has not been changed.

The slower pace of hirings may be related to the fact now the management expects to begin serial production in the second half of 2027. In May 2023, the operation was expected to begin in 2026.
